What is Taekwondo?

"Right direction to the good way of life through Martial Arts"

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art known for its powerful kicks, fast footwork, and disciplined philosophy. The name itself breaks down into three parts:

  • Tae – meaning "to kick" or "strike with the foot"

  • Kwon – meaning "to punch" or "strike with the hand"

  • Do – meaning "the way" or "the path"

Together, Taekwondo means "the way of the foot and fist", symbolizing not just physical combat but also a path of mental discipline and personal growth.

Taekwondo’s roots go back over 2,000 years, drawing influence from ancient Korean martial arts like Taekkyeon and Subak, as well as Chinese and Japanese fighting styles. However, modern Taekwondo was officially developed in the 1940s and 1950s when Korean martial artists unified different styles into one national martial art.

In 1972, the Kukkiwon (World Taekwondo Headquarters) was established in Seoul, South Korea, setting the global standards for training, ranking, and competition. A year later, the World Taekwondo Federation (now World Taekwondo, WT) was founded, making it an internationally recognized sport. Taekwondo later became an Olympic sport in 2000, further solidifying its place on the world stage.
